Ether led the rally, rising 9% to $3,680.98, according to Coin Metrics. Investors are reconsidering the probability that the SEC greenlights spot ether ETF applications amid reports that the SEC has requested document updates from potential ETF issuers and exchanges. BlackRock, Fidelity, Invesco, Grayscale and Bitwise Asset Management also have applications awaiting decisions this year.

The “Code 9.2” drone unit, from the 92nd assault brigade, are moving into a new launch position from where they are about to conduct a rare and potent mission: flying drones into Russia and dropping mines onto key roads inside enemy territory. Oil storage drums stacked in the Keihin industrial area of Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, on Monday, April 15, 2024. Oil prices fell in early Asian trade on Tuesday, with investors anticipating higher-for-longer U.S. inflation and interest rates will depress consumer and industrial demand. "Fears of weaker demand led to selling as the prospect of Fed rate cut became more distant," said analyst Toshitaka Tazawa at Fujitomi Securities. Lower interest rates reduce borrowing costs, freeing up funds which could boost economic growth and demand for oil. OPEC+ could extend some voluntary output cuts if demand fails to pick up, people with knowledge of the matter previously told Reuters.

On top of that, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) subsidies to reshore the battery supply chain to the U.S. are also "having the desired impact," it added. It named companies such as LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI which have more than 65% of U.S. battery manufacturing capacity. LG Energy Solution has the additional benefit of being the most exposed to growth and IRA benefits, they added. But Bernstein said it prefers Samsung SDI to LG Energy Solution for now, as the former offers "growth at a reasonable price." Bernstein gave Samsung SDI and LG Chem an outperform rating and LG Energy Solution a market perform rating.

New York CNN —Target has slashed prices on more than 1,500 popular items beginning immediately, ranging from butter to laundry detergent, as the retailer attempts to attract inflation-wary shoppers turned off by high prices. Prices have dropped effective Monday, with “thousands more price cuts” — amounting to 5,000 items — being reduced over the summer, the retailer announced. Retail sales growth has taken a hit because of high prices: Last month, retail sales were unchanged from March, when spending increased by a downwardly revised 0.6%, the Commerce Department recently reported. By comparison, a year ago, retail sales surged by 3%. In response, Target recently created a new house brand called Dealworthy to take on dollar stores and Walmart.

Einstein's general theory of relativity states that the curvature of space-time causes gravity. But zoom out to enormous scales like clusters of galaxies spanning billions of light years across, and the laws of Einstein's gravity theory appear to change. A 1% adjustment may not sound like a big deal, but it's enough to suggest that Einstein's theory may need a rethink. Now, with this cosmic glitch, there's a new explanation on the table. NASA/CXC/Univ of Missouri/M.Brodwin et al; NASA/STScI; JPL/CalTechThe fact that this cosmic glitch could potentially help astronomers resolve the Hubble tension is a good sign that it may truly exist.

As Ukraine struggles to hold back Russian advances, the country’s officials say they are once again facing the formidable challenge of keeping electricity flowing as Moscow’s forces increasingly strike power plants. To conserve energy, the government has ordered nationwide rolling blackouts for Monday night, broadening the smaller regional ones that have become the norm in recent weeks. “This is another frontline in the war,” said Maxim Timchenko, the head of DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private electricity company, on social media last week. He said the company’s workers were engaged in a “race against time” to restore power to consumers. The nationwide blackout, scheduled from 6 p.m. to midnight, will affect the entire country for the first time this year, but it is unclear if it will continue past Monday.

Copilot+ PCs with AMD and Intel chips will follow, Microsoft said during a press keynote address on its campus in Redmond, Washington. AI models will be able to generate images based on written descriptions as well as drawings. Microsoft is banking on Qualcomm's energy-efficient Arm -based chips that can handle AI models to defend its Windows franchise. The new PCs can run some AI models locally without an internet connection. Microsoft has had little success in getting people to adopt Arm-based Windows computers, which haven't always performed as well as PCs running Intel or AMD chips.

Natural gas futures have cleared their 200-day moving average and appear to have entered a long-term basing process. Given the potential for a long-term turnaround phase in natural gas prices, we were drawn to the energy sector as a source of potential long-term stock opportunities. Secondary resistance for natural gas comes from a Fibonacci retracement level near $3.50/MMBtu. How to play it One of the natural gas-related stocks that sets up well from a technical perspective is Cheniere Energy (LNG) , which is a provider of liquified natural gas. Energy prices have been relatively stable across the world, including in the United States, which helped devise the plan. But Russia’s war effort in Ukraine is intensifying, making it increasingly clear that efforts by Western allies to squeeze Moscow’s oil revenues are faltering. A variety of factors have allowed Russia to continue profiting from strong oil revenue, including lenient enforcement of the price cap. Russia’s development of an extensive “shadow” fleet of tankers has allowed it to largely circumvent that policy. That has allowed the Russian economy to be more resilient than expected, raising questions about the effectiveness of the coordinated sanctions campaign employed by the G7.

Versatile and resilient, the lobster survives by molting, shedding its skin and growing into a new, bigger shell. Red Lobster said it planned to reduce its locations as it prepared to to sell most of its assets. In the meantime, surviving Red Lobster restaurants will remain open. It has been a painful, slow end for Red Lobster, whose death throes were telegraphed earlier this year when the company reportedly sought to restructure its debt. After decades as a General Mills subsidiary, Red Lobster was purchased by a private equity firm in 2014, and bolstered by a 2020 investment from a Thai seafood conglomerate.

Vistra Corp. has doubled over that period, while Constellation Energy is up nearly 62% and NextEra Energy has surged 34%. "This is not your old utility, where you just get a dividend and you're happy," Shahriar Pourreza, managing director of energy, power and utilities at Guggenheim Partners, told CNBC. The sector was oversold coming into 2024, with the market going too far in pricing in the impact of interest rates, Pourreza said. Power companies with deregulated assets are able to respond to market conditions more quickly than traditional utilities, he said. The tech sector is looking for clean energy to power data centers as they are simultaneously trying to limit their carbon footprints.

Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, at the U.K. Jamie Dimon's days as CEO of JPMorgan Chase are numbered — though its unclear by how much. In a response to a question Monday about the bank's succession planning, Dimon indicated that his expected tenure is less than five more years. That's a key change from Dimon's previous responses to succession questions, in which his standard answer had been that retirement was perpetually five years away. Even when he steps down as CEO, however, it's likely he will stay on as the bank's chairman, JPMorgan has said.

Brent crude futures extended gains on Monday, inching up amid political uncertainty in major producing countries after Iran's president died in a helicopter crash and the Saudi crown prince cancelled a Japan trip, citing health issues with the king. Brent gained 10 cents, or 0.1%, to $84.08 a barrel by 0454GMT, after rising to $84.30 earlier, its highest since May 10. One AI model that is built to help investors pick winners in the stock market has grown confident in the near-term upside for a mid-sized energy stock. Some of the data sources that feed into the iFi AI model include macroeconomic updates, news articles, fundamental company data and technical trading indicators. The AI model is bullish on more energy stocks than just Marathon, as Southwestern Energy also makes the cut. In a filing on Monday, AEP Ohio asked the state's public utilities commission to approve its proposals to create a new customer class and a set of tariffs specifically for data centers. On the other hand, data centers have created roughly "less than one" full time job per megawatt of energy consumed, the filing said. AEP Ohio's new service queue has been paused since March while the company assesses its response to the 30,000 megawatts of requests from data centers. "We believe some of that queue is speculative, but we want the real customers and counterparties to commit to Ohio," Reitter said. Creating an income-producing portfolio
  + stars: | 2024-05-20 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
A lot goes into creating and managing an income-producing portfolio that works for you. Knowing your expenses will give you a good sense of the income you’ll need. Ways to generate incomeTake the income you think you’ll need and subtract from that the income you expect. For example, if you need $65,000 a year but will only bring in $40,000, you’ll need to generate the other $25,000. • For money you’ll need in three to five years, use short-term corporate bonds as well as longer-term CDs.

A Pennsylvania teenager had to be resuscitated in March when he went into cardiac arrest after drinking Panera Bread's highly caffeinated Charged Lemonade, a lawsuit says. His ordeal was first reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette several days before Panera announced it was discontinuing its Charged Lemonade. Charged Lemonade contains caffeine from multiple sources, including the stimulant guarana extract. Previously, it had advertised its Charged Lemonade as "Plant-based and Clean" with as much caffeine as its dark roast coffee. During his hospital stay, they implanted a subcutaneous defibrillator, a device that will shock Adams' heart if he has a life-threatening heart rhythm in the future.

There's one major thing the West could, but won't, do: kill all Russian banks' access to the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications, or SWIFT. 'Russia's economy is in deep, deep trouble'Despite the West's frustration with how Russia's economy still appears to be holding up, the sanctions appear to be finally working. "In five years, you're going see a really disastrous slowdown in the Russian economy," said Portes, who called for stronger sanctions enforcement. "A significant problem is that they are running out of foreign exchange reserves, and you can't create foreign reserves," Portes added.

Russia and Ukraine targeted each other’s territory on Sunday with drone attacks and airstrikes that hit urban centers and energy facilities, as both sides look for ways to inflict damage beyond the battlefield. The Russian military said it had shot down nearly 60 Ukrainian drones over the Krasnodar region of southwest Russia, which Ukraine has increasingly targeted in recent weeks because it is home to energy and military facilities supporting combat operations. Local Russian officials said an oil refinery had been struck in the attack. Russian officials did not comment on the reported strike on the airfield. Ukrainian officials said Russia struck northeast Ukraine, including the city of Kharkiv, killing at least 10 civilians and wounding more than 20 people.
